The Style Playbook #11 — Just Denim

Clean fits, easy movement, and the kind of outfits that feel like you.

This week felt slower in a good way — more walks, more coffee breaks, and honestly… more jeans than usual.
It made me realise how much denim shapes my style without me even noticing.
Straight, baggy, light wash, dark wash — each one gives a different mood, and somehow all of them feel honest.

So this edition is about that:
keeping things simple, clean, and letting your jeans set the energy of your outfit.

Here’s what’s inside:

📚 The Style Playbook – Rule #11 — Let your jeans set the tone.
🧵 Your Weekly Uniform — Two denim fits I kept coming back to.
🧩 Closet Upgrade — 10 jeans from 10 brands to build your rotation.
🎞 Timeless Inspiration Board — The men who made denim iconic.
🎯 Weekly Mission — Find your real denim balance.

Let’s get started.

1. 📚 The Style Playbook – Rule #11

Let Your Jeans Set the Tone

The other afternoon I walked into my place, dropped the keys on the table, and saw a package waiting for me.
I already knew what it was — the flare jeans I’d been looking forward to.

I tried them on right there in the living room, with the late-afternoon light coming in.
And it clicked immediately: this was the exact silhouette I’d been missing… clean, elegant, but a little more relaxed.
That balance I’m always chasing.

I’ve worn straight and baggy for years, but flare has something different.
It shifts the line of your body without shouting.
It gives presence without trying too hard.
It made me realise something simple:

Most men underestimate how much their jeans define their style.
A good pair doesn’t just “fit.”
It sets the attitude, the energy, the whole direction of the outfit.
If the denim works, everything else falls into place.
If it doesn’t… even a great coat can’t save the look.

So this week’s rule is straightforward:

Your jeans set the tone.
Choose the fit that supports you — not the one that restricts you.

Baggy when you want ease.
Straight when you want honesty.
Flare when you want that clean look with a modern twist.

It’s not complicated —
you just need the pair that makes you think,
“yeah… this feels like me.”

2. 🧵 Your Weekly Uniform

Three denim fits that shaped my week

I’ve been wearing jeans almost every day lately — different fits, different moods, but all in the same clean, calm direction.
These three looks sum up exactly where my style is right now.

1) Flare Denim — Modern Shape, Coming This Weekend

Black flare jeans + white tee + brown leather jacket + black boots

You already know the vibe:
clean, elegant, and a bit more expressive — the kind of silhouette that changes the whole energy of the look without trying too hard.

Fit Breakdown

  • Flare denim: gives movement without trying, and makes the whole silhouette feel longer - here

  • White tee: the clean base that keeps everything calm and balanced. - here

  • Brown leather jacket: adds structure up top and keeps the outfit sharp without being loud - here

  • Black boots: anchor the flare and make the proportions feel intentional. - here

Why it works:
It’s simple, clean and honest — nothing forced.
The flare adds the modern twist, but the rest of the outfit keeps it grounded.
It has that “I just threw this on” energy… but with shape, presence and calm confidence.

2) Straight Denim — Clean Layers, Quiet Structure

Some days you want to look put together without overthinking it.

3) Baggy Denim — Morning Coffee Ease

4. 🎞 Timeless Inspiration Board

This week I wanted to look at denim in the simplest way: as the piece that sets the whole mood of an outfit.
Jeans say a lot without trying — how you move, how you carry yourself, how calm or loud your style feels.
And when you look at the men who’ve worn denim best, there’s a pattern:
clean fits, natural colors, and a confidence that comes from not overthinking it.

These are the icons I kept coming back to — the ones who turned denim into a language of its own.

👤 Jeans Icons: The 5 Men Who Defined Denim
1) Steve McQueen — Bullitt (1968)

McQueen had that calm way of wearing jeans that still feels modern today.
In Bullitt, his straight denim is clean, mid-blue, and moves with him naturally.
Nothing forced, nothing styled to death — just a man who looks good in clothes that feel like him.
If you watch the film, you’ll see exactly what effortless denim looks like in motion.

2) James Dean — Rebel Without a Cause (1955)

Dean didn’t complicate anything: blue jeans, a white tee, and a red jacket.
But the jeans are what keep everything grounded — simple, honest, and full of attitude.
In Rebel, you really understand how a basic pair of jeans can become iconic just by the way you carry yourself.

3) Marlon Brando — The Wild One (1953)

If you’ve ever wondered how denim works with leather, just look at Brando in The Wild One.
His jeans have weight and presence — they balance the jacket and the bike without pushing too hard.
It’s masculine, clean, a bit rebellious, but still controlled.

4) Paul Newman — Hud (1963)

Newman’s denim always had this soft, natural quality to it.
In Hud, the straight mid-blue jeans paired with simple shirts show how timeless calm style really is.
Nothing loud, nothing rushed — just clean proportions and quiet confidence.

5) Harrison Ford — Witness (1985)

Ford’s denim in Witness feels real — lived-in, practical, and effortless.
Straight jeans that look like part of his day, not a styling choice.
There’s something honest about it, and that honesty makes the fits feel timeless.

📸 Moodboard
Here’s the moodboard I put together this week — just denim at its purest.
Different eras, different attitudes, but the same idea repeated again and again: clean fits, calm washes and men who didn’t need anything more than a good pair of jeans to look intentional.

Denim Moodboard by nicobohigues

🎶 This week’s soundtrack

These songs have been with me all week — different moods, but all carrying that calm, grounded energy that fits perfectly with the denim theme.

  • Denver – Jack Harlow
Put this on when you’re walking alone and want everything to feel a bit smoother.

  • Sal Rosa – Latin Mafia
Perfect for slow mornings when you’re making coffee and don’t want to rush anything.

  • Cryin’ – Aerosmith
Play it when you need something emotional but powerful — it hits every time.

  • Baker Street – Gerry Rafferty
This one is for late afternoons, windows open, and no plans.

  • True – Spandau Ballet
Save it for those calm nights when everything feels a bit softer than usual.

5. 🎯 Weekly Mission – From Theory to Fit

This week I want you to try something really simple:
pick one pair of jeans you already own and wear them in three different moods.

No pressure, no “perfect outfit”, just try this:

  1. Clean: tee + your calmest pair of jeans.

  2. Layered: add a knit or a light jacket — keep it simple.

  3. A bit sharper: swap the sneakers for loafers or boots.

Pay attention to how each one feels.
Not how it looks — how you feel in it.

The one that feels the most natural?
That’s the fit you should build around.
Start there.

Thanks for reading — and for being here every week.
I love that we get to build this clean, calm version of style together, one piece at a time.
If there’s one thing I want you to take from this edition, it’s this: good jeans don’t shout, they stay with you.

See you next Sunday.
