The Style Playbook #3 – The Power of Balance

It’s not about adding more. It’s about making everything work together.

Some guys chase trends. I prefer chasing balance.

This week is about refining your silhouette — understanding how the cut of a shirt changes when paired with wider trousers, or how a structured jacket feels lighter when balanced with softer layers.

You don’t need more clothes — you need to see how each part works together.

Here’s what’s inside:

  1. 📚 The Style Playbook – Rule #03
    Style is balance.

  2. 🧵 Your Weekly Uniform
    Sharp contrasts, soft balance.

  3. 🧩 Closet Upgrade
Softness, structure, and details that find balance.

  4. 🎞 Timeless Inspiration Board
Robert Redford in The Sting (1973) — effortless charm, tailored ease.

  5. 🎯 Weekly Mission
Build an outfit around structure and softness.

Let’s get started.

1. 📚 The Style Playbook – Rule #03

Style is balance

If you’ve been applying Rule #01 (fit comes first) and Rule #02 (let one piece lead), you’re already ahead.

Now it’s time to eliminate the noise.

Simplicity isn’t about wearing less — it’s about wearing better.

As David Coggins wrote in Men and Style:

Writers like Coggins — and even Flusser before him — remind us that balance comes not from piling on more, but from knowing what to leave out. The cleanest outfits often come from the fewest choices: a shirt that always works, trousers that complement everything, shoes that quietly tie it together.

🧠 How to apply Rule #03:

  • Does this piece really add something — or is it just filling space?

  • Could I remove one item and still feel complete?

  • Does the look feel clean, or busy?

Refining your style isn’t about doing more.
It’s about knowing what to leave out.

Here’s an example from my own mistakes.

Can you see why? Some pieces don’t serve a purpose — the outfit feels overloaded. Without the tie, beanie, sweater, or scarf, it would look cleaner and still complete.

2. 🧵 Your Weekly Uniform

Sharp contrasts, soft balance.

This week’s outfit is all about proportion and dialogue between textures. Wide-leg trousers bring volume, a lightweight shirt keeps things open and relaxed, and the leather jacket adds structure without looking stiff. The balance comes from how each piece plays a different role, yet none of them overpower the other.

[Fit Breakdown]
· Light blue button-down shirt (worn slightly open): Adolfo Domínguez
· Black wide-leg trousers (similar option): Zara
· Black leather jacket, soft shoulders: Adolfo Domínguez
· Black belt (similar option): Adolfo Domínguez
· Black loafers (similar option): Naked Wolfe
· Brown tote bag (similar option): Adolfo Domínguez

Why it works:
The trousers create presence, the shirt relaxes the silhouette, and the jacket pulls it together. A neutral palette keeps it clean, so proportions and textures take the spotlight. Balance here isn’t symmetry — it’s conversation. Every piece earns its place.

3. 🧩 Closet Upgrade

Softness, structure, and details that find balance.

This week I’ve picked five pieces that show how balance works in practice — structure meeting softness, bold details staying minimal, and accessories that add without distracting. Each one has a role, but none steals the show.

1. Rønning – Utility Fireman Jacket (Olive Green)
Link →
A sturdy, workwear-inspired jacket with a clean cut. The olive tone makes it easy to mix with neutrals. I’d wear it in-between seasons — just a tee underneath is enough to keep you warm.

2. YSL – MYSLF Eau de Parfum
Link →
Fresh on top, warm at the base. It’s subtle but confident, the kind of scent everyone likes. For me, it’s perfect for nights out or situations where I want to stand out — not loud, just right.

3. Octobre Editions – Allen Poplin Shirt
Link →
A crisp blue shirt with a relaxed cut. I keep it as a daily basic — easy with tailoring, under a sweater, or just open over a tee. Simple, classic, and always useful.

4. 33MM – Aspen Straight Trousers
Link →
Straight-cut, slightly wide, and very clean. They’re my reference trousers: timeless, elegant, and best paired with black pieces. A go-to if you want something sharp but not flashy.

5. Cainte – Sun 002 Black Sunglasses
Link →
Minimal black frames with no fuss. I usually wear them in casual situations, just to give the outfit an extra edge. Simple but with presence — they always lift a look.

4. 🎞 Timeless Inspiration Board

Robert Redford — effortless charm, tailored ease.

This week, following his recent passing, I want to highlight Robert Redford in The Sting (1973). Watching him alongside Paul Newman is like a masterclass in quiet confidence. Redford’s style feels sharp but never stiff, elegant but never exaggerated. It’s balance in motion — a reminder of why his influence on men’s style remains timeless.

🎥 Film: The Sting (1973)
Beyond the storyline, it’s a movie that shows how tailoring can be playful and charismatic. The suits are structured yet relaxed, the vests and ties add detail without clutter. Every outfit feels intentional — nothing extra, nothing missing.

👤 Icon: Robert Redford
Redford was the definition of timeless American style. His look blended clean tailoring with a natural ease — whether it was linen shirts, soft jackets, or those classic suits in The Sting. He wore clothes, but never let them wear him. That’s the balance we talk about: presence without excess.

📸 Lesson to take:
When you build an outfit, think of Redford’s formula: a strong foundation, one or two details, and the rest left simple. That’s how style stays relevant decades later.

Robert Redford Moodboard

🎶 This week’s soundtrack
Three tracks that have been on repeat — each one with its own mood, but all perfect for this season.

  • Those Eyes – New West
Perfect for fall vibes. Warm, mellow, and the kind of track you play on a slow evening.

  • I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing – Aerosmith
Pure aura. Big, dramatic, and timeless — sometimes you need that.

  • Scared to Live – The Weeknd
He’s coming to Madrid next year, so I started listening again — and I can’t stop. Smooth, nostalgic, and on heavy rotation.

5. 🎯 Weekly Mission – From Theory to Fit

A small action to apply what you’ve learned. Every week, one simple move to sharpen your style.

This week’s mission:
Build an outfit where one piece is structured and another is relaxed.

Examples:

  • A crisp shirt with wide trousers

  • A soft knit with tailored pants

  • A leather jacket with a lightweight tee

Then ask yourself:

  • Do the two pieces balance each other out?

  • Does one dominate, or do they work together?

  • Could you remove one and still feel complete?

📸 Take a photo of your look and share it with me trough dm or tag @nicobohigues. I’ll pick a few to comment and break down.

Balance isn’t perfection — it’s harmony.

Next Sunday, we’ll dive into the foundation that makes every wardrobe sharper: owning your neutrals.

Thanks for building this with me from the start. It’s only the beginning.
See you next Sunday — same time, same place!
